Banner Ad Tips and Techniques

Labels:

Banner ads can be a very effective and inexpensive way to get your market message out online, although they are probably not as effective as they were when they first debuted.

Like other forms of online marketing, you need to test and track everything that you do with banner ads.

Keep in mind that not all banner ads are created equal; some are much more effective than others. While smart placement of a banner will do some of the work, the ad itself needs to do some work, too. First, don’t just advertise your site in a general way. Instead, promote a particular product or service. Remember: People are protective of their time, and if they have to browse your site to find a product that interests them the chances are much lower that they will buy something than if they click through to your site because a particular product has caught their attention.

Be simple in your message, but dynamic in your design. Animated ads are more eye-catching than static ones, and ads with eye-popping color will do much better than bland ones. Keep the size of the ad small, though. If it takes a long time to load, most visitors won’t bother waiting and they will move on.

Lastly, place ads at the top of the page, so they are seen when the page loads. That will get more attention that an ad placed nearer the bottom, which would require the visitor to scroll down.

Using banner ads can be an effective and inexpensive way to get increased exposure for your site if you follow these tips.

Banner Exchange Program

Labels:

How do you find a banner exchange program? That’s the easy part. Just a simple web search will bring up a host of options. Once you choose a site, usually the process is straightforward. Don’t just go with the first program you come across, though; each one will have its strengths and weaknesses. Some programs focus their attention on logical banner placement rather than others and some specialize in sites that contain a particular subject matter. One thing to which you need to pay particular caution is whether the exchange program charges a fee. Most don’t, but in some cases you’ll get a better exchange ratio (in other words, you’ll have to post fewer banners on your site per one of your banners that is posted) if you pay a fee.

Generally, for every banner you agree to display, the exchange gives you a piece of HTML code that instructs the visitor’s web browser to bring up a banner from the exchange program’s server. In doing so, the banner exchange program can change which banners are on which sites and they can track the success level of particular banner ads on specific sites – information they use when pairing sites with relevant advertisers.

The upside to joining a program like this is that your site gains exposure on a variety of other sites for free. The downside is that you don’t have much control over where your ads appear and what ads you will end up displaying on your site. That means you run the risk of not being particularly fond of what ends up on your site or where your site ends up being advertised.

Banner Ad Technique

Labels:

If you want to place a banner ad on other sites, there are three ways to do it. First, you can arrange to display the banner ads of other companies on your site, in exchange for them displaying your banner. Secondly, you can simply pay a publisher site to post your banner; and thirdly, you can pay a banner network (do a search online for them) to post your banner on a variety of publisher sites.

For anyone who may not have a lot of start-up capital to dedicate to advertising, exchanging banners with other webmasters may be the way to go. You can approach this in two ways. First, you can cultivate relationships with the owners of other websites with whom you can then trade banners. This will allow you to place your banner ads on particular sites and to post other banner ads that suit your site. This can be time consuming, however, as you will have to foster relationships with each webmaster. That means you won’t be able to post your banner on very many sites at first.

To get your banner ad on a lot of sites in a much shorter amount of time, consider joining a banner exchange program. The way banner exchanges work is simple: You post a certain number of banner ads on your site, and the webmasters of the sites related to those ads post your banner on other sites. Generally you’ll have to post more than one banner ad for every one of yours that they post – that’s how the exchange program turns a profit. The arrangement gives them more banner ad spaces than actual ads they need to place for their members. They can then sell the extra ad space to paying advertisers.

Promote Your Site With Banner Ads

Labels:

More than likely, you have seen a banner ad or two (million) if you have spend any amount of time online. You know what they are: those rectangular ads that appear all over the web, touting businesses of all kinds. The basic idea is that these ads – like something akin to real-world billboards – are designed to catch your attention. Your part in all of this is to click on them, which will bring you to the advertiser’s website where you will (theoretically) buy whatever it is they are peddling.

At its base level, a banner ad is a specialized kind of hypertext link, wherein a piece of HTML code directs a web browser to open up a specified web page when a user clicks on it. Instead of a traditional link that uses text as an indication of where to click, a banner ad uses a graphic or an animation.

Much like traditional print ads, banner ads can take many different forms. Some contain only one image (in the form of a JPEG or GIF image) while others are animated, displaying a succession of graphics one after another. Some use audio or video elements (these are called rich media ads) and still others have an interactivity feature that goes beyond you simply clicking on the ad. No matter what form they take, banner ads serve two basic functions: To get your attention and to convince you to “click through” to the advertiser’s website.

Banner Ads Draw Traffic

Labels:

Those little ads that are pasted at the top or bottom of many websites are known as banner ads. Once clicked on they redirect the visitor to an advertiser’s site to provide more information on the advertisement offer. Banner ads are and excellent way to draw traffic to a website and a powerful component of a web-based marketer’s arsenal.

An effective banner ad begins with a well-crafted message. You only have a matter of seconds to convert the visitor to your site before they click to the next page. A catchy, yet believable, offer is the only way to get them to make the click. The placement of the ad is another important consideration. Advertising can be placed in various spots on a web page and come in a variety of sizes, from a small click-on button to a full-page ad.

In traditional advertising vehicles, you will normally see an auto dealerships advertising in the auto section of the newspaper, while banks will sell their mortgage services in the home section. The same considerations should be made when placing a banner ad. Keep in mind the content of the site your ad will be placed on and remember, the most effective advertising works when people are already thinking about the product.

In addition to the standard way to draw traffic to a website through search engine optimization, a well thought out banner ad campaign is an excellent way to attract interest to your product and traffic to your website.

When some one searches in internet with the keywords provided by Advertiser, Search Engine will show the Advertisers link in the top of the result page with different background color.

Organizations like Google, Yahoo! came up with a new type of online Advertisement called "Pay per Click". In "Pay per Click" Ads, Advertiser needs to pay only when somebody clicks on their Ads. Banners are Dead!

Labels:

Yes the title does need an explanation mark - in fact it needs a total explanation hence this article.

Many have cried out the death of banner advertising saying imbedded text links work better. Are banners dead?

One of the earliest and most popular forms of advertising on the internet are banners. A banner is a graphic link to another website site, they can be colour text, pictures, animations, flash, make noises, but all aim to do the same thing - get the surfer to go to the linked site.

There are many reasons for this. Firstly banners are immensely easy to use. One created which isn't too hard with the right banner creation software it is just a case of copy and paste. Loved by webmasters for their simplicity banners spread everywhere, and that is what part of their downfall. They became so common and so many of them were everywhere that the average surfer began to learn to ignore them - advertising fatigue.

Many attempts have been made to overcome this advertising fatigue, including increasing graphic or eye popping appeal. This includes high quality pictures of products, happy people or like advertising fare, or increased interactivity. This interactivity with the banner seeks to get the surfer to engage the banner through a game like "outdrink the college kid", "shoot the movie star" and other like 'activities'. Perhaps the best banner I've seen in this category was a automotive advert in which the car changed from a family car to a race car by the move of your mouse. Obviously benefiting from the ability to use professional advertising agencies. The fact that such large companies as multi-national car companies put time and effort into banners perhaps will let your know that banners are not a waste of time.

Some banners have been immensely successful. 'Adsense is dead' was a prime example. Simple yet dramatic. The catchphrase created controversy and the skull was visually challenging. To anyone involved in adsense (half the net) it demanded to be clicked on. Such a banner however would quickly eat up its potential market (which was probably the intention).

What one must appreciate with banners that they tend to follow the 3% rule. This is the magic number on the internet which seems to be the average conversion rate no matter the ad. As an owner of an article directory I have a banner displayed per page - the average click through rate - 3%. Despite using a banner rotator with 50 plus banners the average rate is 3%. Some banners perform a little better, some a little worse, but the universal average is about 3%. Some people complain their results are much worse than this. I would question how many banners are they displaying? If you displaying 10 banners a page then of course applying the universal 3% law you would have to divide that by ten or an average of .3% per banner would then be acceptable. It could be argued by having two many banners displayed you lessen the affect. The human brain can only focus on so many things. By displaying too many banners at once you make it easy for the viewer to choose to ignore them all.

Remember the repeat visitor. Don't rely on just one banner. Although repeat exposure may produce a result, your visitor may become visually bored seeing the same banner over and over again and ignore it completely. Give them a choice of banners each time thanks to a banner rotator and you will find you overall results will be better.

Finally if your paying for banner advertising you need to be aware of the 3% rule. You then need to know the conversion figure of those hits. Only then can you work out advertising costs and therefore whether a campaign will be worth it or not, profitable or not.

In conclusion banners are still worthwhile, however they have been a victim of their own success. The secret is don't overkill on the banners. Use a banner rotator to display multiple banners rather than displaying many banners on the same page. Using banners of the same display size will ensure they always appear in the correct place and interfere with text or other page features.

Web Site Advertising Tip: Text Links Earned Me A Fortune When I Dumped Banner Ads

Labels:

Before I tell my web-advertising-tip-story about what text links have done for my business, I want you to imagine a situation where you are eagerly seeking information on some medication on the net. Suddenly, out of nowhere an advertisement about some miracle penis size-enhancing thing pops up right in front of you. And to make matters worse, you're some nice lady who does not own a penis. Get my drift?

Banner advertisements prominently displayed at a web site where you are looking for information are almost as bad. My point is that banner advertisements, even when they are not pop-ups are pretty offensive because nobody logs onto the web to be advertised to.

And the figures tell the whole story better than any words can. I once experimented with a banner ad that was viewed almost 100,000 times without a single soul clicking on it. On the same page was a small text link advertising the same product that received hundreds of clicks.

Before I carried out this web advertising experiment, I was already aware of how powerful text links were, but I had never compared the two before. My web-advertising story is so simple that it may disappoint you. All I did from that day was to dump all banner ads and I replaced them with text links and resource boxes complete with links at the bottom of information-packed articles.

To date that particular business I was advertising on the web brings me tens of thousands of dollars on a regular basis and I have never engaged in any other form of advertising save the one I have just described. And it is free. I kid you not.

The hype peddler's intentions towards your wallet or credit card are always suspect, but they are right when they say free web advertising works. I am not trying to sell you anything and I am telling you that it is the only advertising I do and yet I earn a pretty good living exclusively online.

Web Advertising: Beware of The Banner Ad

Labels:

More and more people are these days finding themselves in that situation where they need some web advertising and more often than not they usually require it pronto. Little wonder that many mistakes are made in this kind of hurried situation and folks do not take the time to learn what it takes to advertise successfully on the web.

To start with it is important to realize that the rules for advertising on the web are very different from what you may be familiar with I the offline world, in magazines and newspapers.

Probably the biggest difference is that full color nice looking advertisements do not work as well online. Another name for these sort of ads is banner ads. Banner ads have been responsible for the death of countless online businesses already and yet folks still insist on them.

It is important to understand why banner advertising does not work on the web.

Nice glossy display advertisements are effective in newspapers and magazines, because the nature of the medium accommodates them comfortably. Even on TV we tend to have our own favorite TV ads that we do not mind seeing again and again. The big difference online is that advertisements are a rude interruption to what we are doing. And mostly they are rightly labeled "spam".

If you want your web advertising to be successful then you should start off by avoiding banner advertisements. Throw your idea of transferring that nice successful glossy advertisement online, out of the window. If you do that I will then show you how even free web advertising can be highly effective.

Why You Should Not Refer With Banners

Labels:

It takes only a few minutes to toss a banner on your site. Some merchants encourage you to use banners. It's not that they don't know that they are not so effective in referring leads to them. They know. It’s just that half a loaf is better than none.

They reason that if you're not willing to do the hard work for them, they are better off with banners than with nothing at all. At least banners will give them one way links to their sites.

This serves the merchants but it does not serve you the affiliate in any way.

First, you will not make enough commissions to make the distraction they cause on your site worth it. The more the side attractions on a page, the less the likelihood that your visitor will go through the page. If you've built a website that credentializes you, it will make you lose some visitors who will click out through those banners with a very low likelihood of converting.

Next, you can only say so much in a banner. You cannot give all the pros and cons of a product in a banner. You'll most likely pick the most important benefit and highlight it in your banner. That is not great preselling. In fact, it is selling. This dramatically reduces your conversion rates.

Banners are easy to put on any site. But remember, you're not looking for something that's very easy. You're looking for something that produces massive results and banners don't.

Read this book on affiliate marketing for better analyses of banners and how they hurt your affiliate revenue. You'll also learn all you need to know to build a viable affiliate business.

Are Banner Ads Still an Effective Form of Internet Advertising?

Labels:

Banner ads are the pioneers of internet marketing. The first banner ad appeared on www.hotwired.com (now www.wired.com) back in October 27th, 1994 in the form of an ad for AT&T. Since that time banner ads have taken over the internet in a variety of forms.

A banner ad is a graphical promotion used on websites as a form of advertisement. Banner ads can come in any size you want, however the accepted standard is 468 pixels wide by 60 pixels high. Due to the widespread acceptance of this size, the same banner ad can be used on most websites without having to reconfigure the size and layout. Although banner ads can be used to advertise your phone number, address, or anything else you like, the real purpose behind banner ads is to get someone to click on it and jump to your website.

There is a great deal of controversy about the effectiveness of banners. Some people swear by them, others swear at them, saying they don’t work worth a darn. Although click-through rates have gone consistently downward, the same can be said of banner ad prices. The average click-through rate hovers somewhere around 0.5% range for banner ads. But, with a good banner design and placement it is still possible to achieve a good return on investment, by combining below-average ad rates and above-average response rates.

Banner ads are sold in any one of three ways: cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM), pay per click (PPC), or pay per action (PPA).

Buying a PPC banner is usually more expensive than the CPM basis, but can be much more effective because people actually take some kind of action by clicking though to your site. One of the drawbacks to PPC banner advertising is that one person may click on an ad more than once and you get charged for each click. However some ad providers track IP address, and only charge one click per computer per day. Most places though don’t do this for the simple reason that it means less money in their pocket.

The effectiveness of cost per impression banners can vary quite a bit, depending upon their placement on the webpage and you typically (not always) pay the same whether the banner is displayed prominently at the top of the page, or hidden in a bottom corner. Most CPM banner sites rotate the banners throughout the site (Run of Site – ROS) and throughout the page. Banner ads to reach general audiences are typically priced at $1 to $10 CPM, while targeted sites may get CPM rates of $30 - $50 or more. Even though it may not seem like much, banner ads can be quite expensive. Do the math with me:

If you're paying $10 CPM and the click-through rate is an industry average of 0.5%, then it costs you $10 to get 5 people to your site, or $2 per person. If 2% of the visitors to your site make a purchase, then your customer acquisition cost (CAC) is $100, ($2 / 2%). That means for every transaction you do you need to pay out $100 in advertising fees. Some websites don’t even manage to convert 2% of visitors into customers, especially when they originate from a banner ad.

In order for banner ads to be effective, you need to combine above average click-through rates, with below average banner prices and sell either a high-ticket product, a product with a high markup (like an info product) or have a strong back-end in place so you make money on the second, third, fourth and even twentieth sale.

Pay per action banners are usually the most expensive, since you pay only for a desired action. This can be a product sale, having someone sign up for an email list or any other action you want. PPA banners can be very similar to an affiliate program and use the same type of tracking.

Banner Exchanges

Just like link swapping, some companies have banner swapping programs. Most banner swapping programs are free and some might require you to pay a monthly administration fee so they can cover their costs.

Many of the free companies make money by the in-proportionate ratio of banners you display on your site, vs. your banners being displayed on other sites. Let’s say you need to place a certain banner on your site for a total 10,000 impressions, but you only get 8,000 impressions of your banner on someone else’s site in return. This is how these sites fund themselves. They sell the extra 2,000 impressions you lose, for a profit.

Some banner exchanges are pure and simple; I’ll put your banner on my site, if you put mine on yours. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this if both sites are of a similar interest and get comparatively the same amount of traffic.

Some sites will track your stats and some will allow you to upload multiple banners so they can be rotated throughout the sites where are placed. This way you can determine what works best if you’re paying per impression. It’s also always a good idea to use your own ad tracker so you can follow the click-throughs to your site and see how many actually lead to a sale.

Some banner exchange companies will actually design the banner for you as part of their program. Although I suggest you design, (or have designed) your own banners. If you are going to let the banner exchange company design it for you, make sure it is on target. Some of these companies use software that automatically creates your banner untouched by human hands and unseen by human eyes, until it gets to yours. As with any type of advertising, the design, wording and call to action of your banner is quite important.

Since the purpose of a banner is to stop, interrupt really, the surfer’s train of thought, clicking on a banner is an impulse decision. People need a reason to make an impulse decision so you need to give them one. The following are some tips to help generate the highest click-through rate possible:

- Have a call to action. Always say "click here" on your banner, or some variation thereof. I know this sounds overly simple, but it is often overlooked and can easily double your click-through rates.

- Add a button. Placing the words “click here” into an actual or obvious button on your banner improves response.

- There's no room for subtlety in banners. Your banner should scream your message.

- Try posing questions: "Want to save 15% on your car insurance in 15 minutes?" Questions work better than statements, particularly when they're used to tease your audience. Studies have shown that by changing a statement to a question you can raise your click-through rate by 16%.

- If appropriate use humor. Make sure it’s actually funny and get some others opinions first. Quite often something that might be funny to you, other people may not get.

- Use bright primary colors. Brighter colors attract visitor’s eyes. Blue, green, and yellow elicit the most click-throughs. Stay away from transparent colors either in the foreground or background – they tend to get lost among the colors of most websites so stick with solids.

- Use simple animation. Moving images and blinking animation attract visitors to your banner. Strategic use of movement grabs attention more effectively than static banners. Don’t make them too wild or complicated so the message gets lost, the senses are overloaded and/or the file size is too large.

- Offer a reward or free gift when someone clicks on your banner. It will help motivate people to click. Contests also work well, especially if you’re giving away money. Money is the biggest motivator.

- Run a series of banners. It may take more than one message to tell your story or to go after a particular market. Run a series of banners and vary your message. Keep you message consistent and catchy to make your visitors want to read further. After the fourth impression of the same banner, most people tend to subconsciously block it out in their mind.

- Keep the copy short. Think billboard advertising – the average person spends six seconds looking at a billboard and you have less than a third of that time on the web. Write compelling copy. Use action words that motivate.

- Use italics if you can. Although they don’t have a huge impact, they can increase click-through rates by a few percentage points when compared with standard typefaces.

- Create curiosity. A large number of those who click on ads do so because they are curious. Studies show that curious clickers very widely by demographic and other characteristics, so targeting based on curiosity can be very effective when you have a general interest product or service.

- Use wide banners or tall skyscraper banners. They’re clicked on significantly more than smaller, skinnier, or square banners.

- Make your banner file size is small, so it loads quickly; 10-30kb is typical for a 468 by 60 pixel banner.

Some Tips on Implementing Banner Ad Campaigns

First, determine if you think it would be worth it to participate in a banner ad campaign. Consider the banner costs, compared to an average click-through rate of half a percent, your sites’ conversion rate, profit margins and customer’s LOV (lifetime of value).

Determine where and on what sites you want to consider placing your banner ads, taking into consideration the cost, banner placement, payment types (PPC, CPM, PPA) and if it’s a targeted site or not. Find some websites that complement yours.

Contact the site on which you wish to place your ad and ask if they have a rate card and get info on their payment options. You can also see if they offer any specials or discounts if you purchase in bulk, or even simply ask for a better deal. A lot of the time they will give you one simply because you asked.

Read the submission guidelines. This usually covers things like:

- Maximum file size

- File types accepted (commonly .gif, .jpg and flash - .swf) - Accepted banner sizes - Deadlines for submission and review - How many banners can you submit for rotating campaigns? How often do they rotate the banners? - How do they determine where your banner is placed on each page? - Do you pay for placement or is it random?

Keep track of all your banner statistics. Even though the company you are advertising with may do this for you, it’s also a good idea to track it yourself. This way you can track and determine results like your conversion rate, ROI, CPC (cost per click) and click-through rate for each banner.

All in all, banner advertising can be a key part of your online marketing campaign. Depending on all of the key factors mentioned above, it may or may not be a financially feasible part of your marketing campaign, if it can make you a profit. If it can’t, don’t sweat it, there’s tons of other ways to cost effectively market your business online.

Click-Thru rates On Google Banner Ads Outperform Click-Through Ratios Of Other Media Banners

Labels:

Does your website serve banner ads as a way of generating advertising revenue? Then You should know that the click-thru rates on Google Banner Ads outperform the click-through ratios of the other major media, including Casale, ValueClick, and Busrt Media.

What does this mean for your website? It means that Google banner ads will generate a higher number of clicks and earn more advertising revenue.

Why do Google banner ads achieve higher click-thru ratios than other banner ads? Just like Adsense, Google banner ads are relevant to the content on any given webpage. So, banners that are relevant to what the website’s audience is interested in will be displayed. The others display random banner ads so the likelihood of a user clicking one it is reduced.

Perhaps you didn't know that Google offers banner ads? Google is traditionally known for Adsense, it pay-per-click (PPC) text-link ads. But they do provide banners as well and pay out based on CPC rather than the traditional CPM for banners. You can sign up just as you do for Adsense but you would choose the option for "image ads only." The cost-per-click on image ads tends to be approximately the same as the cost-per-click on text ads.

In my experience, I have found that click-through rates on Google’s image ads are more than a full percentage point higher than the click-throughs on other banner ads. One percentage point may not seem like much, but think of it this way: If your website serves 100,000 banners per day, one percentage point equals 1000 clicks. That’s 1000 more clicks a day which translates into a lot more revenue for your website.

The Game Boy Micro

It sports a sleek vibe with portability and comfort, all in the palm of your hands. And the pocket of your tightest jeans. Switch between four faceplates to match your style and play any of the 700+ titles in the Game Boy Advance library.

The Game Boy Advance SP is deep on the free-style gaming. With its back-lit flip screen, smooth lines, and color selection, this classic system gets you in on the portable fun revolution.

The Game Boy, invented by Gumpei Yokoi in 1989, is the most sold handheld machine ever, and has sold in over 55 million copies!

In 1996 Nintendo released a newer, smaller, and better Game Boy: the Game Boy Pocket. It is smaller, has a better LCD screen and comes in Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Gold, Classic, Black, Hot Pink and Transparent, and one with a light for playing in the dark!

The megahit in Japan for the moment, Pocket Monsters, helped the GB to sell in 10 million copies last year ('97) outselling the Nintendo 64!! That shows that the GB is still a console to count on 9 years after it's release! Now the Game Boy Color is released, with 32,000 colors to choose from and 56 colors at once on the screen.

The Game Boy Monitor
The monitor used by the Game Boy is a simple LCD type screen (Liquid Crystal Display) which can only show 4 different colors or grayscales. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage for the Game Boy. The good thing is that it doesn't consume half as much batteries as other color handheld systems like the Atari LYNX or SEGA Game Gear. the other great things that have been further improved with the GB Pocket is it´s size. you can actually put it in your pocket!

Try putting a Game Gear in you pocket if you can! The two drawbacks of the LCD screen is that it looks a little bit dull in only 4 different shades of grey and it can also be tricky go get a good projection on the screen. You have to have a pretty strong light source nearby. This has been improved with the new GB Pocket, so that's not really a problem anymore.
