Why You Should Not Refer With Banners

Labels:

It takes only a few minutes to toss a banner on your site. Some merchants encourage you to use banners. It's not that they don't know that they are not so effective in referring leads to them. They know. It’s just that half a loaf is better than none.

They reason that if you're not willing to do the hard work for them, they are better off with banners than with nothing at all. At least banners will give them one way links to their sites.

This serves the merchants but it does not serve you the affiliate in any way.

First, you will not make enough commissions to make the distraction they cause on your site worth it. The more the side attractions on a page, the less the likelihood that your visitor will go through the page. If you've built a website that credentializes you, it will make you lose some visitors who will click out through those banners with a very low likelihood of converting.

Next, you can only say so much in a banner. You cannot give all the pros and cons of a product in a banner. You'll most likely pick the most important benefit and highlight it in your banner. That is not great preselling. In fact, it is selling. This dramatically reduces your conversion rates.

Banners are easy to put on any site. But remember, you're not looking for something that's very easy. You're looking for something that produces massive results and banners don't.

Read this book on affiliate marketing for better analyses of banners and how they hurt your affiliate revenue. You'll also learn all you need to know to build a viable affiliate business.
